Rome, Italy, May 4 - Increased competition in the Italian tobacco
sector is the focal point of the agreement reached by the
Agriculture Ministry ans tobacco giant Philip Morris, signed today
by Minister Alemanno and by Philip Morris International CEO Andre'
Calantzopoulos. "We want to ensure the tobacco industry's survival,
as well as its development, whilst sustainable. That's why, after
the battle we won with the EU to save 135,000 workers from being
laid off, we now want to increase cooperation with large
multinational companies". CEO Calantzopoulos is also satisfied: "the
MOU we signed today is an excellent starting point to optimise the
tobacco industry in Italy, making it more competitive on
international markets. It's a partnership for the future, aimed at
increasing tobacco quality and competition in the long run". (AGI) .
